EXPLORING THE GENRE: Argument

1. In the paper, how long does each line of argument need to be? (Won Ryong)
A minimum of one paragraph for each argument is necessary in the paper.

2. What percentage of the paper should be direct quotation? (Won Ryong)
Less than 10% quotation should be used in the paper.

3. How do writers need to write to make the audience think? (Won Ryong)
Writers need to write in a way that make the audience think that the position of the writer is strong and clear, and that it has substantial backing from external sources.

4. Mostly, what tone is used during the argumentative? (Alex)
Usually serious and objective tones are used in argumentative essay to show the audience that you are firm and well informed and critical in an unbiased way (as much as is possible) about your stand and about opposing arguments.

5. Can a ruthless tone be taken? (Alex)
Yes, but avoid subjectively harsh words and vulgarities.

6. Why do people want to read this type of genre? (Alex)
People want to read this type of genre because it represents an important discussion in their professional field, or in the broader society. This type of essay also allows one to see what others are thinking. Those who are undecided about a particular issue can use this kind of writing to make a decision.
