Position Statement

Even though jazz is thought to be loved with passion for music, many people only go for profit, and studio artists make more profit generally.

Project 4

Bullfighting should be banned in Spain or it should go on?

I think it should be banned.

Bullfighting is not really a fight it is an intentional killing of bulls beacuse bull is beaten and given drugs before coming to the fight which makes him weak. For me it is more a kind of animal cruelty rather than tration.

Position Statement

Is it necessary to have complicated security system at the airport for the foreigners to enter US?

No, It is necessary to have a security for the safety of peole, but having a system that takes advantage of foreigners and hurts foreigners feelings to enter US is not necessary.

As a foreigner who enters us at least twice a year, I feel that current security system at this point is not fair for everyone who travels to US, since it is discriminating people by their nationality and US security system can say no to people who they do not want to enter for no reason and also it gives discomfort to everyone who comes to US going through all the security.

project 4

Question: Should China cancel the College Entrance Exam to help the help the colleges recruit more promising students?

Positions: No, the college application system in China can be revised but the College Entrance Exam should not be cancelled.

Reasons: Due to the tradition and current situation in Chinese education system, it is nealy impossible to ensure that every one has a equal oppotunity to be admitted. The best way is to revise the current system to put more considerations in the college admission system, or the College Entrance Exam itself, but the dominant situation of the College Entrance Exam should not be changed.

1. Because if Korean students learn English with American who speak English as mother tongue, their ability to speak English would increase faster than just studying English in Korea.

P4 Debate Subject

What is the primary purpose of the May 13 riot that happened in several part of Indonesia? For the improvement of the economy (banishment of corruption etc), or to remove the Indonesian-Chinese that dominated the economy of Indonesia.

I think that the main purpose for the riot was to wipe out the Indonesian-Chinese from Indonesia.

If the main purpose of the riot was to improve the economy, a riot that involves in death and destructions at a scale as large as the one in Indonesia will not have happened. The riot continues for several days even after President Soeharto stepped down from his Presidency, with the stepdown of the President who was sought to be corrupt, the riot should have ended. However the riot continued on with more innocent people getting killed.

Revised debate topic

1. Debate topics(Revised)

a. What kind of after-school activities will be appropriate for students?- It will depend on each single student; however, after-school activities have to contain some supplementary programs for regular school curriculum such as tutorial services to help students, especially for low-performing students.

b. Should after-school activities be mandatory for every student?- After-school activities might affect on students in many different ways. Some of students might find something in after-school programs, that are very beneficial and helpful to themselves, where others might get just little bit. However, it is proved and accepted widely that after-school programs helps student's social development in many ways. Students can learn leadership, cooperative mind, confidence, and sociability as they involve in sports team and club activities, and acquire some new materials and information they do not know as they take scholastic after-school programs. Therefore, after-school programs have to be mandatory to all students.

c. What is to be mainly focused on doing after-school activities?- Again, after-school programs are basically supplementary programs for regular school curriculum, and therefore, the programs should be focused on something that help students to perform better and improve their school life and wellness of students.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Interview Reports

How long does the interview need to last? (Fangjia)
At least 25 mintues and some instant questions may come up during the interview.

What are some of the unique feature of this genre comparing to the previous ones? (Fangjia)
You can interact directly with the interviewee and the topic, more so than with library or web-based research.

Does questions have to be professional or simple enough to be asked? (Hyuk Joon)
The questions should strike a balance between them. Often time, professional IS simple.

Does any personal opinions of writer have to be involved in this kind of genre? (Hyuk Joon)
In the interest of full disclosure, strong opinions should be confessed, but then the writer should STILL strive for objectivity after making her/his confession. The interviewee needs to be evaluated, but NOT against personal opinions.

What's the average number of questions are put in the paper? (Won Ryong)
Between 4 and 5 of the interview questions should be stated directly in the report, but since the interview will have AT LEAST 12 questions, the remaining 7+ questions should be referenced indirectly in the report.

How do writers describe the answers of the interview? (Won Ryong)
They paraphrase for the most part, although more direct quotes are expected.

What is the balance between reporting and commentary in the report? (WonPyo)
90% reporting and 10% commentary.

What are the stages in creating project? (WonPyo)
Generate list of possible interviewees, get an appointment, conduct the interview, write, revise, and finalize (including non-written elements, such as video).

What is the genre called?
Interview report.

How is this genre structured?
Introductory paragraph: This will state what you intend to do in text ("report on an interview . . ."), the name and position of the interviewee, and some biographical details about the interviewee. This last point will prove to the audience that the interviewee is a good source of information.
Body: Report of the interview, paraphrased but with some quotes.
Last paragraph: Evaluate the interviewee and the information that s/he provided.

On average, how many sentences per paragraph?
Average about 5-10 sentences per paragraph.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Interview Reports

What is the genre called?
Interview Report

On average, how many sentences per paragraph?
5-10 sentences

Who might engage with the genre - that is, who is involved in producing writing in the genre, and who might be involved in reading/using writing in that genre?
Researchers or journalists that specialize in a particular field would be involved in wrting in this genre. People who are involved or will have close professional contact with the subject matter informing the interview, and/or who have the chance to meet the interviewee and other professionals face to face, will be the most important readers.

How is this genre useful? (Muhammad)
This genre is useful because it gives us an opinion from an expert from the field of the topic chosen. It provides a window on how some people related to a topic think, there processes, perspectives, and prejudices.

Where does this genre appear? (Muhammad)
Magazines, books, scholarly journals and other trade publications.

What is the appropriate tense and tone of the interview? (Alex)
Usually the passive voice is used but somtimes the active voice is used. Aspects of the report directly relating what happened in the interview are past tense, while commenting on ongoing conditions in the field--plus the writer's commentary--are present tense. The tone of the interviewer/writer should strive for neutrality, relaying what the interviewee says and does clearly and accurately.

What type of words are usually used in this genre? (Alex)
It is formal but also straightforward; vocabulary should be professional/technical whenever possible.

What is included in this genre? (Sunny)
The whole interview should be precisely explained in the paper along with the questions and answers ask during the interview. HOWEVER, an interview report does not have to follow the order of the questions in the interview, and it should NOT say "Next question . . . Next question." The report needs to be structured by THEMES and not necessarily the chronology of the interview--rearranging things out of order is sometimes necessary. In the end, there should be an overview of the writer's evaluation of the interviewee.

What type of questions should be used in an interview? (Sunny)
The questions should relate to a single central question. The interviewer should be ready to ask follow-up questions based on the interviewee's answers--these can NOT really be prepared ahead of time.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Interview Reports

What is the genre called?
Interview Report

How long is the average paragraph?
100 words .

On average, how many sentences per paragraph?
Approximately 6-10 sentences.

What's the appropiate number of question for the writer to achieve detailed information? (Whajin)
It depends on the scope of the interview; a narrower focus means fewer questions are necessary. For this particular project though, 12-15 questions.

How many subtopics there should be within a report? (Jingjing)
3 to 4 is normal, although this not "standard" and may vary. However, it is good to organize the questions and answers into smaller and more manageable categories.

What type of language is used in this genre? (Rakpong)
Formal language for the paraphrasing and commenting aspects of the report. Since the interviewee is at the heart of the report, more direct quotes are expected. The vocabulary used should use professional/specialized terminology whenever possible, as this helps to reflect the expert position of the interviewee.

What should the conclusion cover, summary of the report or the analysis of the report? (Jingjing)
The conclusion should cover analysis of the report rather than summarizing the report.
It should say what was learned from the interview, and how knowledge from the interview compares with what's already known. It should also evaluate the interviewee.

How much should the interviewer be quoted? (Ebaad)
15 to 20 % of the whole report.

Where and how can this kind of genre be used in daily life? (Ebaad)
In editorials, journals, research papers--almost anything. Readers use the genre to 1) learn about important experts in their field just to be knowledgeable and to better understand the interviewee's own work, 2) to help decide their own perspectives/opinions on a topic, 3) as a guide to their own research.

How is this genre different from others? (Rakpong)
More than many other professional genres, PERSONHOOD and how that relates to the topic at hand is a primary element. The significance of this is that the information that is obtained reflects the experience of a person dealing with the topic, and it may yield information that doesn't exist elsewhere, but it also means that information may NOT be as precise or informative or "objective" as that found in others sources.

What should the interviewer have before asking questions to interviewee? (Whajin)
Basic information about the topic and be sure to know what is being asked--clear and reasonable questions. The interviewer's agenda should be clear, in order to stay "on track."

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Interview Reports

What is the genre called?
Interview report.

What is the objective of this genre?
To report on an interview with professional experts from a particular area of interest. In addition to information on a topic per se, it also reports on how people engage with the topic--which is very different from just "naked" information on a topic.

On average, how many sentences per paragraph?
Average from 5-10 sentences each paragraphs.

Is the author's opinion removed from this genre? (Lily)
Yes and no. Yes, because it is supposed to faithfully report the perspective--not just the opinions--of the person who gets interviewed. By adding author's personal taste, it will cause bias perspective. However, if the interviewer has very strong feelings about the interviewee or about something s/he said, the writer should briefly state their position, in the interest of full disclosure.

Is evidence such as pictures, video clips and quotations important for this kind of genre writing? (Lily)
Yes, because they help to give a greater sense of the subject of the report--the interviewee--to readers.

What are some differences between litereature reviews and interview reports? (Dharanish)
Literature reviews review sources written earlier--commenting on knowledge that has already been produced--but intereview reports depend on an original interview of a person--generating new knowledge. Interview reports are, of course, much more interested in the "people aspects" of engaging with a topic.

How many paragraphs in the report? (Dharnish)
6-8 paragraphs

What should the interviewer prepare before the interview? (DJ)
Before meeting the person, research the past works and past history about the interviewee.

Who is the most credible interviewee? (DJ)
Professional experts on the background of one's topic.

What would be the drawbacks of the interview report? (Woomin)
Drawbacks of the interview report would be that the answers would be mostly restricted to the actions and the knowledge of the interviewee. Even though personal disclosure can be added, the essay should be mostly present information about the interviewee. If something the interviewee says conflicts with something the writer knows or with something that's been established elsewhere, the writer should comment on that difference.

What kind of personal perspective can be added? (Woomin)
See comment above. Also, if there is some important physical activity that happens during the interview, the writer can comment on that.

DEBATES: Airline issues

1. Does the airlines have a right to raise the fee annually?
- No. The airlines do not have a right to raise the fee annually.
Because it is ovious that rised fee will increase other prices too such as the service fee to use the airline or the fees to use the airport system and costomers will have to pay more to get the service from the airline. It will decrease the some's chance to fly with the airlines since some people can not afford to fly.

2. What should airlines focus on instead of trying to sell more tickets during the peak time.
-The airline should focus more on the having a right capacity and demand to make a profit and to offer a right service to customers.

3. Why should the airline reduce the weight of bags for international flight?
- Airline industry is based on flying the product around the world. It takes more fuel to fly more products since the fuel price is going up reducing the weight of bags would be the solution for airlines to make a profit.

Debate (political Motives, opposing)

1. Who was behind the explosion during the 06-07 New Year night?
- The terrorists from the South.

2. How did the explostion effecte the tourism in Thailand as a whole.
- The tourism may stay the same because the event didn't kill any one and mostly only the natives that got injured. The one foreigner won't effect the tourist rate much.

3. What could the police do as in a preperation for the next coming New Year to ensure that the attack won't occur again?
- There's noth we can do because the attacker might be a really small group of people who just easily sneak up with normal people. What the police can do may be warning people to take care of themselves, at best stay home.

3 debates in my topic area (3rd project)

First, which way of best way to solve the economic downturn in Korea?
Ans. Since economic downturn in Korea is caused due to the fact that people avoid to spend the money; therefore, I think that government should spend the money on investing on improving public services, supporting the poor, and cutting off the people's tax, etc. As a result, economic circulation is occurred.

Second, what is the standard characteristic of leader in Korea?
Ans. Leader should understand the mind of middle classes and hopefully think as if he were in their position.

Ans. President should work on hiring more professionals in the position.

2.

Debate Exercise Revised

1. Debate topics

a. What kind of after-school activities will be appropriate for students?
- It will depend on each single student; however, after-school activities have to contain some supplementary programs for regular school curriculum such as tutorial services to help students, especially for low-performing students.

b. Should after-school activities be mandatory for every student?
- It does not have to be mandatory at all. Students have a right to enjoy their school life, and after-school activities, too. If they do not want any after-school program, they should not be forced to participate in the program; however, every school has to encourage their students to take the program for student's performance and wellness.

c. What is to be mainly focused on doing after-school activities?
- Again, after-school programs are basically supplementary programs for regular school curriculum, and therefore, the programs should be focused on something that help students to perform better and improve their school life and wellness of students.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Literature Reviews

What is the genre called?

Literature review

What kind of information is normally found in this genre?

Summaries, and comment on sources related to a particular topic

How is this genre structured?

· An introductory paragraph that explicitly states the purpose (reviewing sources/literature) and that states the guiding question/sub-topic.
· Summary of an individual source, followed by a separate paragraph with a review/judgment of that source
· Repeat for the remaining sources
· A conclusion that evaluates all the sources TOGETHER (not individually again)

How do the three articles related to the topic?

Each of them has some different piece of the question/subtopic.

What kind of environment does the genre relate to?

Writing in the genre must reflect an awareness of the reader's knowledge of the topic and of other literature on the topic.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Literature Reviews

Besides homework, in what kind of situations people use this genre of writing?

Researchers doing their own work, who need to know what kind of sources exist in the field. Also, people who need a better idea of what to look for and what to avoid. Writers will also create literature reviews to help organize their own understanding of new material in the field.

Why is this genre important?

See previous answer.

What is the emotional content of this genre, and how is it expressed?

The only emotions expressed are those contained in the original sources. While the writer judges, s/he does not add emotional content.

How much of the content of this genre is based on reporting the content of each literature source? How much on review of individual sources? How much on overall review?

Summaries of each individual source are about 3/4 of a page, followed by about 1/4 of a page of review/judgment of each individual source. The overall, collective review at the end should be 1/3 to 1/2 of a page.

How are sources reviewed—what kinds of comments do writers in this genre make?

The review of each source and of the three sources together--that is, the judgments--are based primarily on the question that the writer has chosen. Deciding how good or how bad a source is comes down to this: in what ways is the source useful to answering the question, and in what ways is it not useful? EVERY source has positives and negatives; NOTHING is all one or the other. The writer is also required to comment on the facts and the attitudes of each source, if they are wrong or troubling.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Literature Reviews

Is statistics content important for this genre? If yes why?

Yes, but only if one or more of the sources being reviewed in a literature reviews deals with statistical information; if there is none, then statistics wouldn't apply.

What are the most common sources used?

Journal articles, newspaper and magazine articles, books, and websites written exclusively for the Web. However, almost every source is legitimate for literature reviews, so don't neglect audio and video.

What kind of context can strengthen the genre?

Having and using more background knowledge about a subject will help you to write a more thorough critical review of each source.

Why do people write this type of genre and what is the purpose of the genre?

It is written to tell people more about the literature that exists on a particular topic and to evaluate the quality of that literature--it is NOT primarily to inform people about a topic.

How many paragraphs?

8 to 10 paragraphs.

How long is the average paragraph?

6-8 sentences.

What kind of vocabulary is used?

Much the same kind of vocabulary the writers of the original sources use. Since you are writing about particular literature that's out there, it's best for your writing to reflect that source literature.

EXPLORING THE GENRE: Literature Reveiws

Does the literature review have to follow the intro-body-conclusion format like other type of writing?

Yes, it does. "Intro-body-conclusion" is a very generalized format that can fit everything; it's what constitutes those components (especially the body) that varies. See information on the structure of literature reviews for more details.

How should the writer reword the quotes that are used on the literature reviews?

The writer should usually paraphrase, and use direct quotations only when the original author said something in a particularly interesting way. In either case, the paraphrase or quote must indicate specifically where the information came from.

Who might engage with the genre - that is, who is involved in producing writing in the genre, and who might be involved in reading/using writing in that genre?

Anyone who wants to research and let people know about the topic and what s/he had come up with on it will write in the genre. As for reading and using the genre, others who are doing research on the topic will be interested; based on the writer's review, they will look for--or avoid--particular sources. Also, anyone who wants to find any information on particular topic that they are looking for and do not have time to look at original sources will read and use it.

What are the goals of the people engaging in the genre - that is, what do the writers and readers want to get out of the genre, and what might they do with the new knowledge after reading?

See answer to previous question.

What genres do you know that are similar to this particular genre?

Book reviews, movie reviews, restaurant reviews, and hotel ratings with reveiws might be similar to literature review. All of these things, like literature reviews, feature summaries/descriptions of something, followed by a judgment on those things.

The airlines.

1. Does the airlines have a right to raise the fee annually?
- It is understandable when the gas price is going up but other than that, when the fee goes up with out a reasonable issue annually, it would not be appropriate since many people can not afford to fly when they needed.

Debate: May 13

Editted: 2/23/07

1). What could have started the riot? Was it because of the economy or due to the four dead Trisakti students?

Economy, I believe that the cause of the riot was because of the economy as the corrupted government have caused the price of food to be very high

2). What is the motivation of the riot? To force the corrupt government to see the sufferings of the people or was it to kick the chinese out of the country?

To force the Chinese out. If the purpose of the riot was to just let the government see what is going on, the Chinese will not have been targeted and killed.

3). How should the military have tried to stop the riot? By giving their soldiers weapons such as tear gas, guns, etc, or by asking them to hold a curfew?

I think that a curfew will be better and this action actually works during a racial riot that happened in singapore a 40++ years back.

Debating questions

1. Would making all of the public schools throughout the states to have same education system increase the overall achievements of most students?

I think it will depend on the situation of individual students. Same education system does not mean that every students should be taught in same level. For example, some students who are in high level of math or certain subject are placed in advanced class and some students who fall behind the average line should be in separate class to work them out effectively. Therefore, the achievement level would not have to be changed due to equalizing the education system.

Taking drugs is like cheating and it is not justified.

Debate; jazz

1. Jazz is disappearing in our society, should jazz be defended or should be left to disappear?
A: I personally think that jazz is form of art that should be defended as well as loved. I know jazz is becomming more unpopular these days but if it can gain popularity as well as demanded, people will find interest and passion for jazz.

2. Why do you think jazz is disappearing amongst the teens?
A: Teenagers are influenced by fashion magazines, stars, and friends also. Now medias plays more of current music trends, such as rap and hiphop, and influence teenagers avoid jazz. Also media plays only little bit of jazz, jazz is unknown to many teenagers. Not only that it influence them to avoid other form of music, it force them to only listen to current music trend and teach them it is the 'right' thing to do.

3. If jazz is to be tought in school as an academic course, who would support?

yes, depends on how much a student is willing to change and adapt to a new lifestyle.

Is Purdue is doing a good job in making international students feel welcomed?
I don't think so because I always see a crowd of international students hanging together, they seem like they don't want to adjust.

Debate

1. Should the dangerous sports like skydiving, bungee jumping, free diving remain legal?
YES, they should remain legal because the safety of these sports are up to the mark now days and if these sports are made illegal then may be very few people will practice these sports illegally, but who will do they will be more unsafe because they will be deprived of the safety support provided by government when it was legal .

2. Should government spend money to insure the safety in these sports?
YES, it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety of the people. Any mishap in these sports would result in the decline of entertainment industry of the country.

3. Bullfighting is inhumane or a bravery act?
